If your organization meets our criteria for “Qualified Educational Users,” it is eligible for ITF Educational License.
Schools, educational institutions
The school needs to be institutionally accredited by an accrediting agency nationally recognized by the Indian government. ITF provides a significant discount covering all academic users. Please provide precise numbers of the teachers, staff and students that are expected to work with the fonts.
ITF requires the educational partner to hold an hour long presentation for all the intended users where process of creating fonts is explained in an inspiring and informative way. The idea for this obligatory presentation is to illustrate the value of typography. ITF will deliver the presentation in PDF format.
Teachers
Must work full- or part-time at qualifying educational institutions.
Students
Must be enrolled full- or part-time students at qualified educational institutions. ITF will require a copy of the student ID, and signing of the special student licence agreement.
Examples of entities not eligible for educational discounts:
- Non-accredited schools
- Training centers
- Non-Indian residents or educational facilities
Please contact us for more information.
The easiest and fastest way to pay is by credit card (or PayPal) online and direct downloading of the fonts. But if you don’t have a credit card, you can also pay by direct bank transfer (bank wire) or by cheques. But for all the offline payments, your fonts will be available only after the payment is received.
The Indian Type Foundry (ITF) was established in 2009 by Satya Rajpurohit and Peter Bilak to create and market fine quality typefaces for the Indian market and global world. ITF specialises in developing retail and custom Unicode-compliant digital fonts.
Besides designing typefaces, ITF also serves as an educational platform for typography. ITF is committed to organising lectures and workshops, as well as to actively promoting the publishing and exchanging of ideas. The intention is to give the same attention to Indian typography as Latin typography has received in the last few decades.
ITF accepts two interns for the period of 3-6 months. The interns should have a strong interest in typography and basic skills with drawing letters. Experience with font production software such as FontLab, Glyphs or Robofont is a great advantage.
If you are interested in applying for the internship at ITF, please send us an email with your portfolio and a letter of motivation.
ITF office is located in Ahmadabad, Gujarat.
Custom type may include modifications of our retail fonts, creation of different language versions of our fonts, or entirely new fonts made to fit your needs.
For more information please get in touch.
Like most software, fonts come with terms of use called an End User Licence Agreement (EULA). Each software developer has its own terms of use, and its EULA specifies what is and is not allowed when using the fonts. For example, the ITF EULA specifies that you can use licensed fonts for an unlimited amount of time, but you cannot give the fonts to people who donʼt have a licence to use our fonts. You must agree to the EULA before buying and using the fonts.
When you purchase a licence for a ITF font or package of fonts, you automatically acquire a Single-User Licence. If additional users wish to install and use the fonts, you must purchase an additional Multiple-User Licence. The price of a Multiple-User Licence varies depending on the number of users of the fonts.
An existing font licence can be extended to any number of users. The price already paid will be subtracted from the total price, thus it doesnʼt matter if you buy a multiple-user licence right away or later.
Briefly, OpenType is a font format jointly developed by Adobe and Microsoft in the late 1990ʼs. It came into wider use only after 2000, when Adobe included support for advanced typographic features in their InDesign, PhotoShop, and Illustrator applications. OpenType fonts support Unicode, which means that a single OpenType font can contain more than 65,000 glyphs. A single font could be used for setting texts in multiple languages. OpenType fonts are cross-platform; the same file can be used on Mac and PC, and OpenType fonts should behave consistently on both platforms. The biggest advantage is that OpenType fonts use Unicode standard, so the published text is always accesible, on all applications and computer platform that use Unicode.
Unicode is an accepted international computer standard that includes support for all major scripts of the world and is adopted by all current major computer operating systems. It also has support for major Indic (Indian) scripts that include Devanagari (Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit), Bengali (Bengali, Assamese), Gurmukhi (Punjabi), Gujarati, Oriya, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Unicode is the basis of most modern software internationalization. All ITF fonts are Unicode compliant.
Advantages of Unicode
Documents or web pages made with Unicode text, when viewed with an appropriate program or web-browser on a computer that has support for Unicode, will always be viewed in the right script even if the font in which the documents or web-pages are made is not installed into the system.
On the internet, only the information prepared with Unicode fonts will be properly analyzed by the search engines. Thus it will be possible to search the internet in Punjabi, if the information uses Unicode standard. This is not a small a achievement.
In the future, no major computer company will support any other font standard. Thus, all other standards will become obsolete. Unicode allows exchanging data and documents without having to worry about fonts.
ITF Windows font files are packaged as zip file archives. Zip file archives have a file extension of .zip. Recent versions of Windows (XP and 2000) can unpack zip file archives and self-extracting zip files when you right click on the file and select Extract. Otherwise, use software such as TurboZip, WinZip, or FreeZip to unpack these files.

Fonts located in /UserName/Library/Fonts are available to a particular user, but not to any other users with separate logins for the same machine.
Fonts located in /Library/Fonts are available to all local users of the machine.
Fonts installed in /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts (during installation of an Adobe application) are only available to Adobe applications. To make them available to other applications, move them to /Library/Fonts or/UserName/Library/Fonts.
If you want fonts to be available to applications running in Classic mode, (available only on older systems) you must install fonts into the Fonts folder inside the System 9 folder. They will be available to both your Classic System 9 applications and your OS X applications.
If you have a problem with ITF fonts, try restarting your computer first. We do test our fonts rigorously, so chances are that there is a problem with font installation. If you are using a font manager and the font still doesnʼt work, try installing directly to the system instead.
If the font still doesnʼt work, please do get in touch. Please donʼt forget to mention exactly which fonts you use, how you installed them, which platform you use them on, and which applications they donʼt work in. Providing screenshots from your computer is very helpful.
Some older applications use old Remington Layout of the typewriters. Those don't follow Unicode standards, and the text formated in Remington can't be used on websites or easily to be exchanged.
ITF recommends using Unicode compliant applications. If you need to use the old font format, ITF can convert our Unicode fonts to different font format, for an additional fee.

ScribeDOOR
Alternatively you can use ScribeDOOR plugin for Adobe CS, which adds the ability to edit and treat text in 21 complex languages, including Arabic, Hebrew, Farsi, Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Bengali, Kannada and many scripts to create multilingual documents.
ITF designs and develops Unicode-compliant fonts. Below are some instructions for using Unicode fonts to set Devanagari texts.
Use Unicode-compliant text editor such as OpenOffice, TextEdit, etc.
How to use Devanagari fonts in Adobe applications:
Some old text documents working with Indic languages use 8-bit encoding, which required to use proprietary fonts. Such fonts can only use 256 glyphs, which is not sufficient for correct rendering of Devanagari (or other 10 Indic writing scripts). The various non-standard 8-bit encodings has been rendered obsolete by Unicode, which assigns each character a unique numeric value and name. Unicode standard provides the capacity to encode all of the characters used for the written languages of the world. ITF doesn't support the legacy 8-bit formats, instead to recommends to use Unicode standards, and Unicode compliant fonts.
The Indian government (Ministry of Communications & Information Technology) issued recommendation to use Unicode to represent Indic scripts.
Typing in Hindi is easy. On a Mac OSX, you'll first need to activate Devanagari keyboard.
There are two Keyboards Mac offers – Devanagari QWERTY (phonetic) and Devanagari Inscript (type writer). Phonetic keyboard is really easy to understand, it works exactly the way we type Hindi using Latin script.
