Ashoka Odia is an Odia-script typeface created for use in long passages of text intended for immersive reading. As a design, Ashoka Odia is a series of firsts: it is the first text typeface designed for Odia that applies Latin-style stroke contrast to the script’s letterforms. It is also the first family for the Odia script to apply industry standards to each of its constituent fonts by e.g. making multiple related weights available and by including kerning and OpenType features. Ashoka Odia is the first typeface published by NID-graduate Pratyush Das. Ashoka Odia is ITF’s first commercial release for the Odia script, too. The family includes five styles that range in weight from Thin through to Bold. The characters in each weight feature a mild degree of visible stroke contrast. The amount of contrast remains relatively similar as you move up the scale from lighter to heavier weights. The fonts’ character sets include 270 devoted Odia-script glyphs. Thanks to the fonts’ OpenType features, these can combine into representations of all the sounds required by the Odia language. The character set is rounded out by a series of Latin-script numerals and basic Latin punctuation marks. The Ashoka Odia typeface is named named after Ashoka, the famous Indian emperor who reigned in the third century B.C.E.
